Best gift

Lord, move my heart to mourn my sin,

And weep for others' pain.

Give me desires that turn from self

To bind up and support the lame.

May I not weep with Esau's tears,

To seek but to restore my loss;

Give me the tears of Israel,

To wrestle in the arms of God.

Give me the tears of Abraham

Beside the altar of his son,

To offer up all my desires,

Even your best gifts, to blend with fire

Until they are not mine.

Then in my emptiness and loss,

Show me the answer of your cross,

The vision of the crucified,

And then to weep because you died.

Oh, give to me, that I might live,

The best gift of a heart to give.
